About

Formed after three college friends from northern England reconnected during the Covid 19 quarantine of March 2020, we realised that our love of metal, prog and dark alternative music remained despite the dramatic changes in our lives and shifts in geographic locations.

Between 2020 and 2025 we reviewed 2090 albums and EPs, focusing on all extreme metal genres, progressive guitar music, and everything from hardcore to dark ambient art. We expanded into content creation and launched our YouTube channel in late 2022 and moved away from death and black metal in 2024.

As of 2026, Scream Blast Repeat will focus on avant-garde metal, post-metal, prog metal, and dark alternative music. Our attention will go towards documentaries and feature videos on our YouTube channel. We will continue to publish album reviews on our website but will only concentrate on our niche genres. There is no need for artists or record labels to contact us to consider albums for review. We will find the music if it’s good.

In the age of streaming algorithms, Spotify playlists, and AI intrusion into music creation, it’s easy to write the epitaph for the album as a chronological listening experience created by the imagination of human agency. We will persist with the belief that the LP is not dead, and people still want to read album reviews, even if the number of music lovers relying on them is marginal. It is for you wonderful individuals that Scream Blast Repeat will continue to provide written content for reading consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of music do you review as of 2026?

We review progressive metal, post-metal, avant-garde/experimental metal, and dark alternative.

Let us define these for you with a few examples so you know what to expect:

Dark Alternative (The Cure, Depeche Mode, Björk, Curve, etc.)

Progressive metal (Gojira, Meshuggah, Tesseract, Periphery, Haken, etc.)

Post-metal (Neurosis, Cult of Luna, Amenra, The Ocean, etc.)

Avant-garde/Experimental metal (Today is the Day, Igorrr, Triptykon, Thy Catafalque, etc.)

Contemporary artists that operate in a similar paradigm to the above will be the focus of our attention at Scream Blast Repeat.

What can we expect to see on the Scream Blast Repeat YouTube channel?

As of 2026, we will concentrate more on content creation for our YouTube channel. You can expect to see artist discography reviews, documentaries, interviews, and more material in our “top seven” series.

Does Scream Blast Repeat no longer listen to extreme metal?

We still listen to this type of music. Death metal and black metal are of declining interest to us, but we appreciate the progressive interpretations of these genres. Grindcore, metallic hardcore, and thrash are enjoyable, but you can read album reviews of these artists in any print media or online publication. We want to be known for our expertise in a smaller field of music within the metal spectrum.

Is Scream Blast Repeat open to new writers joining its team?

Yes, we’re always happy to work with new writers. Scream Blast Repeat is a voluntary endeavour powered by a passion for music. Everything we do is free of charge. There are no salaries, and we do not operate on an income. Contact us via Facebook if you want to write for Scream Blast Repeat.

Why bother writing music reviews?

That’s a good question. Streaming algorithms and instant access mean it’s easier than ever to listen to music and use your own instinctive judgement. The perception that music critics are armchair elitists is understandable, but we disagree. We review albums for those people that would like some recommendations in a world of abundance. Others might want to read our reviews to see what we think of their favourite artists. There are many reasons why the written word continues to be important even if the main beneficiaries are the artists (to include positive feedback in their press kits), PR companies (to back up the glowing appraisal of their artists), and record labels (to include positive feedback in promotional campaigns).

However, we must be clear that we will never use AI to compose an album review, nor will we accept financial incentives to provide a positive review. Honesty and integrity are essential to Scream Blast Repeat. We know that artists appreciate honest appraisals of their work.
